Globe Labs, the developer community of Globe Telecom, shows its support to the Free Software Movement by being a major sponsor of the “Towards a Free Digital Society” forum on March 26 at the UP Diliman Engineering Theater featuring free software activist Dr. Richard Stallman.

The forum will revolve around the need for free software and other threats to freedom in the digital society such as massive surveillance, censorship, digital handcuffs, and the “War on Sharing” which Stallman claims makes every online activity precarious.

“Since Globe Labs uses an open platform for its APIs (Application Program Interface) which allow different application programs to interact freely with each other, we are one with Dr. Stallman’s advocacy.  We want to encourage third-party developers to innovate, something which would be difficult to do with proprietary software,” said Anne Michelle Santos, Product Manager for Digital Media.

Stallman is the founder of the Free Software Foundation which promotes the universal freedom to study, distribute, create, and modify computer software.  He will be visiting the Philippines on March 24-26 and March 28 in UP Cebu Campus and will speak in a forum organized by the Foundation for Media Alternatives, an NGO seeking to democratize information and communications systems and resources for citizens and communities.  The event is in cooperation with the UP Diliman Computer Science Department.

“We believe that we should support a software development model based on maximum use and sharing, public good, and collaboration rather than profit.  We hope that through this event, we can increase awareness on free software among young professionals, youth, students, and digital rights advocates; strengthen the Free Software Movement in the Philippines; and locate software freedom in the struggle for social justice and human rights,” said Nica Dumlao, FMA’s Internet Rights Program Coordinator.
