Innovation: An Enabler of Sustainability #SAP, #Globe share How #Technology Helps Ensure Sustainable Future

Published

on

Nowadays, more and more consumers and businesses take on sustainability as a strategic imperative to unlock competitive and growth opportunities. In a recent report, PricewaterhouseCoopers noted that 43 percent of CEOs in the Philippines included climate change and environmental damage in their strategic risk management activities.

But what does innovation have to do with sustainability? How does it help enable companies to become more sustainable?

In the recently held Globe Innovtalks, in collaboration with SAP SE (NYSE: SAP), Simone Pigason, Head of Digital, Resilient, and Sustainable Supply Chain of SAP Southeast Asia, and Ivan Curada, Cloud Engineer at Globe’s Information Systems Group (ISG), shared how innovations can help Philippine businesses pursue sustainability in today’s world.

Innovation in Supply Chains

Nowadays, most greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions originate from businesses’ supply chains. A 2020 study by non-profit charity CDP revealed that emissions from the supply chain are about 11.4 times greater than those from operations, making up at least 92 percent of the whole GHG emitted by a business.

Simone Pigason noted that digitalizing supply chains help organizations reduce their carbon emissions to become more sustainable. What’s more, this enables supply chains to be agile, productive, and connected, thus resilient to future disruptions.

“The global health crisis has shown businesses the importance of having resilient supply chains. And as various disruptions still happen globally, resilient supply chains are a must to provide consumers consistently with the goods and services they need,” said Pigason.

Pigason added that SAP has two sustainability enablers that allow businesses to track their sustainability efforts.

First, the Sustainability Control Tower automates the report of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts and GHG emissions of businesses. Operating in a single dashboard, it also keeps track of emission levels from various areas. Through the Sustainability Control Tower, businesses can see what parts of the Philippines have the most carbon emissions.

Secondly, the Plastics Warrior is a gamification process by SAP, which motivates consumers to recycle more. Aside from notifying supermarket shoppers about their plastic use, it utilizes advanced analytics to learn about a retail company’s plastic waste. With the help of Plastics Warrior, businesses can enable Filipino citizens to recycle more.

Innovation in the Workplace

According to Curada, Globe generates at least 4,000 memos each month, with an average of five pages. If these are printed on paper, it consumes around 20,000 sheets or 40 reams per month. Recent research by Benoit Cushman-Roisin and Bruna Tanaka Cremonini revealed that 16.67 reams of paper are produced from a single tree, which takes years to grow.

To minimize paper consumption and enable faster approval processes, Curada explained how Globe digitalized its memos through its own system called memo.ph. This system drastically cut paper use in the company.

“This serverless application digitalizes our memo approval processes to allow us to save at least two trees every month. It also offers templates to make memo creation as easy as possible while using an open-source library, so you are not paying for any license to make this application possible,” added Curada.

Pigason could not agree more about utilizing technology in innovating the workplace.

“To become more sustainable, organizations must be able to digitalize their traditional processes. All these solutions and applications prove how technologies can help build a sustainable future in today’s world,” she said.

Get ready to greet the new year with a bang as GCash is giving buy load users a chance to win up to P300,000 in the last draw of its Lucky Load promo, which gives customers a chance to win a portion of a weekly pot prize by purchasing load and playing their earned tickets.

In the past weeks from November 21, 2022, thirteen buy load users have already won thousands of pesos, making their Christmas holidays a merrier experience, indeed!

GCash customers just need to keep on using the Buy Load feature until December 28, 2022, so that they get one ticket entry for every P50.  Participants should bear in mind that the number of tickets will be rounded down. For example, if the load amount is P70 or P99, this will only earn you one ticket entry. So, why not spend some more and save that load for when you need it?

Once a GCash user gets the ticket, they can select 6 icons from a roster of 30 icons. After picking the six icons, the user can submit the ticket entry. To win, a player must have six matched icons, in no particular order, to the winning draw.

GCash Lucky Load Promo

For the past weeks, the prize of P150,000 has been divided equally among all users with the corresponding number of matched icons. And since there were no winners during the 4th weekly draw, the prize was added to the pot of the final draw.

If there’s still no winners during the last draw, the remaining pot prize will be raffled off to 500 lucky winners on December 29, 2022. Winners will be posted on the GCash official Facebook page on or before January 10, 2023

Vertiv Powerbar iMPB enables uninterrupted additions, upgrades and service without using floorspace

a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, continues the expansion of its power distribution portfolio with the availability of Vertiv Powerbar iMPB, a modular busbar system designed to enable seamless, on-demand power upgrades in dynamic data center environments. Available in both copper and aluminum conductor offerings, the Vertiv Powerbar iMPB family features capacities from 160 amps to 1,000 amps and delivers reliable overhead power distribution, with the inherent benefit of also maximizing cooling airflow. The system is ideal for use in almost any size or style of data center, as well as laboratories, distribution warehouses, adaptable manufacturing plants and other dynamic environments. The Vertiv Powerbar iMPB is available in North America, Latin America, Asia – including Australia and New Zealand, India, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The busway system allows businesses to cost-effectively optimize and adapt power distribution infrastructure over time, maximizing availability through continuous power delivery to critical loads. User-friendly tap-off boxes with breaker protection can be placed anywhere along the busway and isolate active IT loads and nearby branch breakers to ensure continuous power delivery. The adaptive busbar comes with a simple sandwich-style joint pack construction that makes installation secure and easy, with no special tooling required. The Vertiv Powerbar iMPB includes a variety of capacity and connection configurations to allow for adjustments and upgrades with minimal outside support and no loss of power to critical loads.

“Today’s dynamic IT environments require enterprises to be more flexible and scalable in managing IT equipment. The Vertiv Powerbar iMPB solves our customers’ power distribution and uptime needs without the need for complex cabling. Not only does it provide savings in the long term, but also simplifies data center design and deployment, and eases cooling airflow,” said Arunangshu Chattopadhyay, director, AC Power and power distribution, at Vertiv Asia.

The Vertiv Powerbar iMPB, a mature offering from Vertiv’s E&I brand, will supersede the previous Vertiv™ Liebert® MBX busway product that was available in North America and EMEA, and is compatible with the previous offering.
