Top 7 iOS First Person Shooters

First person shooters on smartphones and tablets are one of the most popular and divisive areas of gaming. Therese quite a vocal crowd of gamers who argue that virtual thumbsticks cant replicate the accuracy of a gamepad or keyboard and mouse. Others argue that mobile devices are still a long way off from being close to their AAA console cousins.
Wherever you stand on the mobile FPS argument, there is no denying that iOS first person shooters can be an enjoyable way to waste away a few minutes of your spare time. They have come a long way since the first iPhone came out and offer a thrilling experience for gamers.
Without further ado, here, in no particular order, are the top 7 iOS first person shooters. Blast away!
(please note that we havent included any games which arent available on the App Store at the moment e.g. Bioshock, The Drowning)

1) Unkilled (Free)
In the latest Madfinger Games FPS, players play Joe, a member of the tough WOLFPACK, a zombie-killing security organisation designed to take out the undead threat before it threatens to topple civilisation and end life as we know it. Set it New York, the FPS feature a range of levels, including subways, docks and suburban areas.
There are an impressive number of guns to choose from and missions include protecting survivors, manning the gun on an armoured vehicle and taking down zombie bosses. There are optional raid missions letting you complete objectives such as killing hordes of zombies, collecting supplies or rescuing a survivor to gain additional cash and other rewards.
Graphically, this looks amazing. Even on the latest iPod Touch (6th generation), this is something very beautiful. Trees, buildings and vehicles are detailed. The sound effects add to the atmosphere (listen to the game on headphones!), too.
It is free to play, however, and you will need to be connected to the internet. The game is a single player affair and there is no offline option, either. Please bear in mind that there are timers and IAPs for in-game currency to help upgrade your arsenal (and you will need it upgrade it at times).
But these are minor drawbacks for one of the most entertaining first person shooters on iOS. Go get em!
2) Modern Combat 5: Blackout (Free)
Gamelofts Modern Combat series has been around for almost as long as the iPhone. Whereas Modern Combat: Sandstorm and its sequel Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus were very arcade-like FPS, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation and Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour aimed to closely emulate its console equivalents.
The fifth entry continues this trend, with a cinematic globe-hopping single player campaign that takes you from Venice to Japan and further afield. The story is by and large a throwaway affair, with the usual predictable twists and turns. It looks and sounds amazing, taking full advantage of Apples Metal API to give the maximum oomph to its graphics. If you have a device with an A7 processor and upwards, you should give this a try.
Multiplayer is where Blackout shines, however. You can form a squad, play the usual multiplayer modes such as capture the flag and use voice chat. Gamepads are also supported. There are a wide variety of optional IAP packs to help customise your character and build your arsenal.
Like Unkilled, this requires an internet connection to play and also has timers.
3) Dead Effect (Free)
With Dead Effect 2 arriving on 22nd October, you should check out the first Dead Effect if you havent done so already.
Dead Effect puts you in the shoes of a member of Unit 13, waking from hibernation on the ESS Meridian. Something is very wrong as no-one is responding. You discover the crew is dead and the ship is crawling with the undead. Time to lock and load!
Graphically, this looks fantastic. There are a range of weapons to discover useful when encountering the hordes of zombies you will fight along the way. There is a survival mode to play around with for added rewards as well.
4) N.O.V.A. 3: Freedom Edition (Free)
N.O.V.A. 3: Freedom Edition is the free, ad-supported version of Gamelofts N.O.V.A. 3.
Playing as Kal Wardin, you return to Earth to help save humanity and stop a deadly threat. Taking place over ten large levels, the single player campaign is filled with the usual twists. Its admittedly pretty forgettable but doesnt get in the way of the game being a blast to play. Aside from looking amazing, its actually very fun. The takes inspiration from Halo, Crysis and other popular sci-fi shooters and ties them together in a neat little package.
There is also a multiplayer mode offering the usual capture the flag and other modes for up to 12 players at a time.
5) Neon Shadow (79p/$0.99)
Neon Shadow by Crescent Moon games is a great throwback to the days of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. There is something very satisfying about shooting wave after wave of robots in narrow corridors. Lovers of retro-looking first person shooters should definitely consider downloading this.
6) Deus Ex: The Fall (£4.99/$6.99)
What is there to say about Deus Ex: The Fall that hasnt been said already?
Its won tons of awards, has a great story set in the Deus Ex universe with a new character (Ben Saxon, ex-SAS) and offers the same brilliant variety of gameplay as the Deus Ex games.
But its in your pocket, so you can experience the joy of Deus Ex anywhere you please. Bored in the boardroom? Whip this out and play. Stuck doing chores? Deus Ex it!
This mini AAA experience is well worth the premium price tag and you get hours of gameplay with Deus Ex: The Fall, no two games will be the same.
7) Bullet Rush (Free)
Bullet Rush is a multiplayer FPS in the style of Counter Strike. There are seven maps to choose from at the moment, with more set to be released as time goes on. You have a wide variety of weapons to play with and a range of modes to have fun with, including deathmatch and team based modes such as blue vs red.
