Back in 2016 BlackBerry signed a deal with China’s TCL Communication to give it exclusive rights to sell BlackBerry-branded phones in most countries after it ended all internal hardware development to focus on software development, including security and applications. Today the company has announced that starting August 31, 2020, TCL Communication will stop selling BlackBerry-branded mobile devices and has no further rights to design, manufacture or sell any new BlackBerry mobile devices.

However, TCL will continue to provide support for the existing portfolio of mobile devices including customer service and warranty service until August 31, 2022. It is not clear if BlackBerry will sign a deal with some other company to sell its devices or stop making smartphones completely.

Check the official statement from BlackBerry below
When TCL Communication announced in December 2016 that we had entered into a brand licensing and technology support agreement with BlackBerry Limited to continue making new, modern BlackBerry smartphones available globally we were very excited and humbled to take on this challenge. Indeed our KEY Series smartphones, starting with KEYone, were highly-anticipated by the BlackBerry community. What made these devices great wasn’t just the hardware developed and manufactured by TCL Communication.

TCL Slide out concept phone

With more and more phones coming with foldable displays, both along the horizontal and vertical axis, TCL has supposedly gone another route and built a concept phone that incorporates a slide-out display instead. The idea behind the design is to have a tablet experience on a regular phone once the screen is pulled out.

TCL was initially planning to showcase a working prototype of the concept device during MWC 2020. But since the show was cancelled after the Coronavirus outbreak, TCL may have to hold a separate event to unveil the device to the public.

The working mechanism for the screen to slide is unclear at the moment. The phone appears to have one continuous display that curves completely on both sides. A break in phone’s design can be seen between the center of the phone and the dual front-facing camera along the right side. It is anyone’s guess as to how the flexible display bends or wraps behind the other to achieve this design.

At the moment, both the Huawei Mate X and the Samsung Galaxy Fold adopt a similar strategy of having a smaller phone that unfolds into a larger screen for tablet experience.
