GCash, Sakahon Kick off First-of-its-kind Financial Literacy Roadshow for Local Farmers

As part of its mission of financial inclusion for all Filipinos, GCash, the country’s no.1 mobile wallet, is helping address local farmers’ limited access to business and financial resources through a first-of-its-kind financial literacy program designed to help them adopt digital financial solutions aimed at improving their livelihood.
Filipino farmers have long been experiencing many challenges to keep the country’s agriculture industry alive. Aside from dealing with constant extreme weather conditions, which seriously impact their livelihood, many merchants or middlemen also buy the farmers’ fresh produce at measly prices.
To allow farmers to take advantage of digital financial solutions in managing and growing their income, GCash has partnered with Sakahon, an award-winning agritech social enterprise that enables farmers to sell their products directly to consumers. GCash provided the materials and expertise on financial literacy to the farmers who are part of Sakahon. The initiative also included an introduction to GCash products and services such as Send Money, Pay QR, as well as loans and savings solutions.
This roadshow kicked off in Floridablanca, Pampanga with at least 100 participants. Through the roadshow, farmers and their families learn new ways to save, invest, access insurance, and qualify for loans and credit using the GCash mobile app anytime, anywhere.
Farmers can save their money and enjoy interest rates of as high as 7.2% per annum through GSave, avail of money-lending options for their business through GLoans, grow their money by investing in a market fund with GInvest, and protect themselves and their families by getting insured through GInsure – all on the GCash app. By the end of the roadshow’s first run, at least 80 percent of the attendees downloaded the GCash app.
“We are excited to share this gift to each and every Filipino, as it has proven to help people from all walks of life,” shared JR Marfori, GCash Head of Ecosystem Development. “It is of extreme importance to focus on the communities who need it the most. And to improve the lives of each Filipino financially is our purpose through and through.”
For farmer Jerald Cabaobas, GCash’s financial literacy sessions serve as an opportunity to further grow his business.
“Itong training po na ito ay makakatulong para mas mapadali ang proseso ng pagbabayad at pagbebenta naming mga magsasaka. Marami din po palang mga ibang services na maa-access namin sa GCash na makakatulong sa pagpapalago ng aming mga farms.”
GCash has been building digital financial ecosystems in various sectors and communities across the country. Aside from the financial literacy programs, GCash is also activating establishments that locals frequent in and helping onboard GCash Pera Outlet partners in the farming communities to provide easy access to cash-in and cash-out services as well as bills payment solutions.
Elaine Timbol, CEO of Sakahon said, “our partnership with GCash is essential in achieving our vision of equitable prosperity in the countryside through financial literacy and innovation that is inclusive and accessible; the farmers and their families are at the heart of this endeavor.”
GCash vows to continue innovating and making the lives of Filipinos better every day through achieving financial inclusion and literacy for local farmers and other sectors.

AI Opportunities for Women

The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents many opportunities for women. This was the key message emphasized by Connected Women, partner of leading mobile wallet GCash during its GTalks event, held in celebration of UN Women in Tech day on April 25, 2023.
Gina Romero, co-founder of Connected Women, explained how the organization is aligned with GCash’s vision of financial inclusion through the AI training programs it provides for women, helping them qualify for remote employment, even without formal education.
Romero believes that women, regardless of background or financial standing, can work with AI. The rapid growth of emerging technologies and industries such as AI, coupled with the wider adoption of remote work, are creating opportunities for women to upskill and earn a livelihood from their homes while taking care of their families.
“I’ve had a diverse career, from pig farming to air cabin crew, before entering the tech industry. Anyone can learn the skills needed for the future of work. We need women in tech at all levels to create an equitable future. Connected Women ensures accessibility for women, including underserved groups, to participate in the digital economy,” said Romero.
“We are thrilled to be working with GCash, a company that truly exemplifies diversity in tech and leadership roles. More than just providing them with accessible financial services, GCash is also pushing for more opportunities for women in line with our goal to normalize women leaders in tech,” said GCash president and CEO Martha Sazon.
In collaboration with the country’s leading mobile wallet, Connected Women enables its AI remote workers to easily receive their payments through GCash. The Connected Women community platform is now accessible through the Earn Money feature in the GCash app.
Since the partnership’s inception in March 2023, the feature has already garnered over 11,000 sign-ups. Based on Connected Women’s latest statistics report, 91% of respondents were not male (female, non-binary, prefer not to say), majority of whom are looking for remote work.

#GCash ‘DoubleSafe’ Face ID to block Fraudsters

GCash has rolled out its ‘DoubleSafe’ Face ID security feature to 100% of its fully verified users, as of May 10, 2023, blocking fraudsters from taking over the accounts of its users.
‘DoubleSafe’ uses an industry-first face recognition technology to ensure that the person accessing an account is the same as the one who registered in GCash. This means, even if users inadvertently give out their mobile personal identification number (MPIN) and one-time pin (OTP), their account still cannot be accessed from a new device without scanning the owner’s face.
The feature also looks for the user’s liveness to ensure photos can’t be used to bypass the security control.
“The face recognition feature is built within the app and doesn’t require mobile phones with high-end features. We made sure all our verified user base will have access to this security feature as we notice the prevalence of phishing attempts outside the app,” said Pebbles Sy, Chief Technology and Operations Officer of GCash. “DoubleSafe will further protect our customer’s accounts and hard-earned money.”
Aside from this security feature, GCash has taken many actions to combat fraud.
“From January 2022 to April 2023, GCash has already blocked 3.1 million accounts that have been tagged as fraudulent. We have also taken down 722 phishing sites and 38,000 malicious social media posts and accounts from January 2022 to April 2023,” Sy explained.
Likewise, around the first week of May alone, GCash has already barred 23,000 accounts that breached parameters under the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act. This means, the e-wallet monitored transactions in these accounts that are against the AMLA.
GCash actively pursues fraudsters in cooperation with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).
GCash is consistently strengthening its campaign against fraudulent activities with #GSafeTayo by educating its users on how scams work and how they can be prevented.
GCash will NEVER send personal messages to address concerns or get personal information, especially the MPIN and OTP. It reminds users to be wary of phishing schemes in the form of fake websites and suspicious online games. Customers are urged to only make transactions within the app.
To report scams and fraudulent activities, visit the official GCash Help Center at help.gcash.com/hc/en-us and message Gigi on the website, and type, “I want to report a scam.” Customers can also contact the official GCash hotline 2882 for queries and other concerns.
