The Globe Group, the Philippines’ leading digital solutions platform, will spotlight its shift from telco to techco at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) this month, led by its visionary President and CEO Ernest Cu.
Hosted by GSMA, a global organization unifying the mobile ecosystem, this year’s MWC will be held from February 27 to March 2, 2023. The MWC is the world’s largest and most influential exhibition for the connectivity industry.
The Globe Group’s presence at the much-anticipated international event is an opportunity for the expanding company to showcase its commitment to being at the forefront of innovation and progress.
“Our debut at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona is a crucial milestone for the Globe Group as we aim to establish ourselves as a leading digital disruptor and enabler in the Philippines, and banner our evolution from telco to techco. We are proud to showcase our commitment to uplifting the lives of Filipinos through digital transformation, and to be part of the global conversation on the future of technology and connectivity,” said Ernest Cu, President and CEO of the Globe Group.
At the event, Cu will banner the company’s pivot from telco to techco in a panel with Transcelestial, one of the companies supported by the Globe Group’s Kickstart Ventures.
Cu will join CEOs of top Southeast Asian telcos in a discussion on new network-related technologies and connectivity challenges in the Philippines, among others.
Meanwhile, Martha Sazon, President and CEO of GCash, the country’s leading fintech platform, will be one of the keynote speakers in a plenary session at the MWC and speak on the topic “New Behavior for a New Reality.” Sazon’s discussion will examine the changing user experience and its essential role as capabilities surrounding the metaverse strengthen.
Sazon will also be a session speaker at the “Fintech Summit: The Rise of Fintech Disruption,” where she will delve into how fintech is enabling the creation of powerful and disruptive solutions that are redefining the market.
GCash, the dominant mobile wallet in the Philippines, is now a double unicorn valued at $2 billion and with a user base of ~76 million. It continues to expand financial services, from payments and cash transfers to credit, savings, insurance and investment products, and features an e-commerce platform that offers various retail options such as food, wellness, travel, recreation and real estate services.
Most recently, GCash started its beta launch of GCash Overseas, which allows Filipinos based in Japan, Australia and Italy to sign up for GCash using an international SIM– another game-changer in the Philippine fintech industry.
Now on limited launch, GCash Overseas will give the first 1,000 users from the three countries access to GCash using an international SIM. Once fully verified, they can start using their GCash to send money home for free (GCash to GCash), paying bills, and buying load credits. The full launch of this feature is expected later this year.
With almost a hundred portfolio companies under its wing, the Globe Group has successfully expanded into the country’s leading digital solutions platform, with services in fintech, heath tech, adtech, edutech, outsourcing and managed services, enterprise data, and investments. It aims to create a Philippines that is digitally inclusive by leveraging technology and continuously innovating to meet changing industry conditions.

Globe leads Telecom Innovation with first ever Private 5G SA Network in PH
Globe, in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), has successfully showcased the first-ever Private 5G Standalone (5G SA) Network in the country. Built with technology from Athonet, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, the network delivers cellular connectivity to enterprises and organizations as an alternative or complementary solution to Wi-Fi and public mobile technologies.
The strength and scalability of the Athonet 5G Core was demonstrated at the recent INNOVANIA: Technology and Innovation Day, a tech fiesta that featured a myriad of digital solutions.
Athonet’s 5G SA Starter Kit is an easy-to-use, all-in-one package, including SIM cards, a radio, and a top-rated mobile core network in a briefcase. It offers high-quality video and audio, with download speeds of up to 780 Mbps and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. The kit is a plug-and-play Private 5G SA Network powered by a standard outlet and is designed to work seamlessly with business applications through its N6 interface.
A private 5G SA network provides unique advantages for entities, including enhanced security, customization, ultra-low latency, and high capacity. It can handle massive Internet of Things (IoT) deployments and is particularly beneficial for mission-critical applications.
“The breakthrough Private 5G Standalone Network brings us closer to a digitally transformed enterprise landscape,” said Yoke Kong Seow, Chief Technical Advisor at Globe.
“5G offers a lot of surprising use cases. Exploring it and doing customer pilot deployment will bring meaningful results and opportunities. This successful demonstration of the first Private 5G SA Network heralds another innovation for our enterprise customers to experience,” he added.
The partnership with HPE offers flexibility in building the Private 5G network. Enterprises can choose to host the solution in the cloud, acquire a complete solution including HPE edge servers and Athonet software, or just license the software to integrate into existing infrastructure. They can also customize their own kit for specific coverage and capacity requirements as use cases and business requirements grow.
Loh Khai Peng, Vice President, APAC Sales at HPE, said, “With our Athonet technology, we are enabling a new era of connectivity for businesses. HPE is proud to partner with Globe on this groundbreaking endeavor, providing solutions that are not only tailored for specific needs but are also scalable, secure, and highly reliable.”
With Globe’s commitment to digital transformation and the successful showcase of the Private 5G SA Network, the future of Philippine businesses is being redefined, ushering in an age of increased productivity, cost efficiency, and quality.

Globe Cable Theft Incidents
Leading digital solutions platform Globe recorded 746 incidents of cable theft in the first five months of the year, affecting at least 1,600 customers who experienced connectivity issues due to the deliberate cable cuts.
The cases declined from the same five-month period last year at 1,876, and a full year total of 3,598. But this is due to the reduction in existing copper cable lines as part of Globe’s transition to fiber, and the bundling of cables that makes it more difficult to cut. Copper is the type of cable often stolen and sold to junk shops at around P470 per kilo.
“While the reported cases may have decreased, we believe one incident is one too many. Because ultimately, it’s our customers who suffer. Cable theft causes unnecessary inconvenience for our customers,” said Raymond Policarpio, Vice President of Globe At Home Broadband Business.
Globe continues to vigorously campaign against cable theft, partnering with law enforcement agencies and local government units to address the problem. Globe also had to allocate P1.4 million to reimburse subscribers affected by outages caused by the illegal acts.
“As we continue to work closely with law enforcers and local government units to stop these thieves, we urge our customers to be vigilant and immediately report cable theft incidents via Globe Security hotlines and firstname.lastname@example.org,” Policarpio added.
Reports can be made via the Globe Security Hotline: 0917 6888545 (nationwide), 0906 3244626 (Visayas) and 09177915794 (Mindanao).
Globe has undertaken several measures to improve connectivity services and address cable theft. It continues to expand its fiber deployment and migrate its customers from fixed wireless and legacy technology since last year. In 2022, Globe installed 1.4 million fiber-to-the-home lines, with the rollout continuing vigorously this year. This move guarantees access to high-speed, reliable internet while simultaneously mitigating the impact of pervasive cable theft.
Aside from reducing its copper cable footprint, Globe is introducing fiber cable labeling to deter thieves. It is also undertaking vertical clearance correction and tree-trimming initiatives to limit easy access to aerial cables.
Working together with various stakeholders, Globe is transitioning its operating teams from a reactive stance to proactive roving operations. In August last year, Globe allied with an industry-wide initiative known as “Oplan Kontra Putol.” This collective effort, in conjunction with other cable and telecom providers in the country, aims to raise public awareness about illegal cable cutting and disruptions it causes families and communities.
Globe has also amplified its campaign against cable theft through its Bantay Kable Program, operating in synergy with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units, such as in Bacolod City. In 2022, Executive Order 015 was issued by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez to address the rampant theft of wires of various telecommunications companies in Bacolod City.
Globe calls for support from various local chief executives to strengthen existing legislation to prevent unnecessary telco service disruptions due to intentional wire cutting and theft

Globe 5G connected robots
Leading digital solutions platform Globe once again achieved a significant technological milestone as it successfully showcased 5G-connected robots at the recent INNOVANIA: Technology and Innovations Day held at The Globe Tower in BGC.
The event served as a platform for Globe teams and vendor partners to introduce their latest technological advancements and innovations that hold immense value for both the company and its customers.
In a collaborative effort with MySolutions, the authorized distributor of Pudu Robotics in the Philippines, Globe presented a series of robots, all successfully connected to the 5G network, enabling them to perform their designated tasks with precision and efficiency.
For one, the concierge robot effortlessly guided attendees to various booths and meeting rooms, the delivery robot flawlessly transported materials throughout the event, and the cleaning robot maintained a pristine environment within the venue.
These demonstrations clearly showed the power of 5G-connected robots in boosting productivity in many industries. This innovative solution encourages businesses to use automation, proven to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.
The developments also underscore Globe’s strategic positioning in leveraging its technological capability to enable and deploy 5G-connected robots across diverse sectors.
“Globe has always been a purveyor of innovations and new technology solutions, consistently emerging as a key enabler of diverse 5G use cases. These advanced robots are capable of executing various use cases spanning across industries, including hospitality and logistics. They represent a significant leap forward in leveraging 5G technology to drive efficiency and effectiveness in diverse operational scenarios,” said Gerhard Tan, Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovation at Globe.
“With our extensive network infrastructure and cutting-edge technologies, we empower individuals, businesses, and industries to unlock the transformative potential of 5G,” he added.
Tan said through seamless connectivity, Globe facilitates groundbreaking applications in various domains such as autonomous vehicles, smart cities, immersive virtual reality experiences, and revolutionary Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. Its recent accomplishment with the 5G-connected robots is yet another testament to the company’s commitment to propelling society into a future defined by limitless possibilities.
With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), robots are increasingly being deployed across industries to automate processes. As Globe continues to enhance its capabilities, it remains at the forefront of the Industry 4.0 revolution, consistently championing technological advancements that significantly contribute to both business and societal growth.
