Philippine Environment Month 2023

Published

on

In celebration of Philippine Environment Month this June, Globe reaffirms its commitment to addressing plastic pollution and encourages stakeholders to contribute to a circular economy through resource efficiency, waste reduction, and product stewardship.

Aligning its sustainability commitment to circularity to the theme of this year’s celebration, #BeatPlasticPollution, the digital solutions platform is rallying its employees, partners, and customers to promote circularity in its products and operations.

According to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), ‘circular economy’ is defined as creating an ecosystem that uses resources more efficiently by ensuring that resources, products, and services are used for as long as possible.

Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer Yoly Crisanto asserts, “When it comes to sustainability, we understand that our efforts must go beyond our corporate boundaries. Working together with our partners, employees and suppliers is integral in creating sustainable business models.”

Established in 1988 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 237, the Philippine Environment Month provides a platform for environmental action and awareness. Aligned with the theme of the United Nations (UN) World Environment Day observed every June 5, this year’s focus is on the problem of plastic pollution, which poses significant threats to the environment, health, and economy.

In support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, along with the new Philippine Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Act of 2022 implemented by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Globe has taken early action in waste reduction, recovery, and diversion.

It has partnered with recyclers for its events and marketing collateral, implemented internal plastic waste management programs, and embedded circularity in some of its products, among others.

The company’s broadband business, Globe At Home, recently launched a recyclable and upcyclable packaging design for its newest Fiber product, GFiber Prepaid. Its introduction to the market is the product of strong collaboration between Globe and its vendor partners. Together, they worked to highlight the following features:

● Extending product packaging lifespan

○ The packaging can be reused as a box or repurposed into a laptop stand, thereby extending its usability.

● Adherence to global industry standards

○ Nearly all materials are responsibly sourced, with necessary Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certifications.

● Minimizing plastic waste and print materials

○ The box does away with plastic pouches and the printed instructional manual to further reduce the waste that could potentially end up in landfills.

Globe At Home aims to shift 100% of its modem packaging to recyclable materials by the end of the year.

“We constantly push boundaries to discover innovative ways that can help diminish our environmental impact. Embedding circularity in our operations is one of the ways through which we achieve this goal. The Philippine Environment Month gives us the chance to shine a brighter spotlight on this commitment and invite greater community involvement,” Crisanto pointed out.

Beyond its business operations, Globe is also a participant of the UN Global Compact, through the Global Compact Network Philippines (GCNP), and co-leads the Planet Pillar under the GCNP’s Private Sector Champions (PSC) initiative. Focusing on plastic waste circularity, the GCNP Planet Pillar has partnered with Basic Environmental Systems and Technologies, Inc. (BEST), a company known for environmentally-sound waste management, to implement a community-level pilot program dubbed “Iwas Kalat, Dagdag Kita” in Barangay Escopa, Quezon City. The program was launched on May 15 this year.

Published

on

Globe, in partnership with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), has successfully showcased the first-ever Private 5G Standalone (5G SA) Network in the country. Built with technology from Athonet, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company, the network delivers cellular connectivity to enterprises and organizations as an alternative or complementary solution to Wi-Fi and public mobile technologies.

The strength and scalability of the Athonet 5G Core was demonstrated at the recent INNOVANIA: Technology and Innovation Day, a tech fiesta that featured a myriad of digital solutions.

Athonet’s 5G SA Starter Kit is an easy-to-use, all-in-one package, including SIM cards, a radio, and a top-rated mobile core network in a briefcase. It offers high-quality video and audio, with download speeds of up to 780 Mbps and upload speeds up to 150 Mbps. The kit is a plug-and-play Private 5G SA Network powered by a standard outlet and is designed to work seamlessly with business applications through its N6 interface.

A private 5G SA network provides unique advantages for entities, including enhanced security, customization, ultra-low latency, and high capacity. It can handle massive Internet of Things (IoT) deployments and is particularly beneficial for mission-critical applications.

“The breakthrough Private 5G Standalone Network brings us closer to a digitally transformed enterprise landscape,” said Yoke Kong Seow, Chief Technical Advisor at Globe.

“5G offers a lot of surprising use cases. Exploring it and doing customer pilot deployment will bring meaningful results and opportunities. This successful demonstration of the first Private 5G SA Network heralds another innovation for our enterprise customers to experience,” he added.

The partnership with HPE offers flexibility in building the Private 5G network. Enterprises can choose to host the solution in the cloud, acquire a complete solution including HPE edge servers and Athonet software, or just license the software to integrate into existing infrastructure. They can also customize their own kit for specific coverage and capacity requirements as use cases and business requirements grow.

Globe Cable Theft Incidents

Published

on

Leading digital solutions platform Globe recorded 746 incidents of cable theft in the first five months of the year, affecting at least 1,600 customers who experienced connectivity issues due to the deliberate cable cuts.

The cases declined from the same five-month period last year at 1,876, and a full year total of 3,598. But this is due to the reduction in existing copper cable lines as part of Globe’s transition to fiber, and the bundling of cables that makes it more difficult to cut. Copper is the type of cable often stolen and sold to junk shops at around P470 per kilo.

“While the reported cases may have decreased, we believe one incident is one too many. Because ultimately, it’s our customers who suffer. Cable theft causes unnecessary inconvenience for our customers,” said Raymond Policarpio, Vice President of Globe At Home Broadband Business.

Globe continues to vigorously campaign against cable theft, partnering with law enforcement agencies and local government units to address the problem. Globe also had to allocate P1.4 million to reimburse subscribers affected by outages caused by the illegal acts.

“As we continue to work closely with law enforcers and local government units to stop these thieves, we urge our customers to be vigilant and immediately report cable theft incidents via Globe Security hotlines and bantaykable@globe.com.ph,” Policarpio added.

Reports can be made via the Globe Security Hotline: 0917 6888545 (nationwide), 0906 3244626 (Visayas) and 09177915794 (Mindanao).

Globe has undertaken several measures to improve connectivity services and address cable theft. It continues to expand its fiber deployment and migrate its customers from fixed wireless and legacy technology since last year. In 2022, Globe installed 1.4 million fiber-to-the-home lines, with the rollout continuing vigorously this year. This move guarantees access to high-speed, reliable internet while simultaneously mitigating the impact of pervasive cable theft.

Aside from reducing its copper cable footprint, Globe is introducing fiber cable labeling to deter thieves. It is also undertaking vertical clearance correction and tree-trimming initiatives to limit easy access to aerial cables.

Working together with various stakeholders, Globe is transitioning its operating teams from a reactive stance to proactive roving operations. In August last year, Globe allied with an industry-wide initiative known as “Oplan Kontra Putol.” This collective effort, in conjunction with other cable and telecom providers in the country, aims to raise public awareness about illegal cable cutting and disruptions it causes families and communities.

Globe has also amplified its campaign against cable theft through its Bantay Kable Program, operating in synergy with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units, such as in Bacolod City. In 2022, Executive Order 015 was issued by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo “Albee” Benitez to address the rampant theft of wires of various telecommunications companies in Bacolod City.

Globe calls for support from various local chief executives to strengthen existing legislation to prevent unnecessary telco service disruptions due to intentional wire cutting and theft
