Globe Enhances Network Energy Efficiency Through Wireless Access Cost-Saving Initiative

#Globe has introduced its wireless access cost-saving initiative, leveraging advanced technology to enhance energy efficiency and lower operational costs, thereby reinforcing the company’s commitment to network optimization and sustainability.

The inherent power-saving features in Base Station Technology (BTS) enable Globe to incorporate Symbol Power Saving and Carrier Shutdown techniques into its #LTE and #5G networks. Both solutions reduce energy consumption by adjusting the network’s operation to real-time demand, ensuring high efficiency without sacrificing service quality.

Symbol Power Saving, or “Microsleep,” saves energy during short idle periods by turning off the power amplifier when no data is being transmitted, resulting in about 1-4% power savings. During prolonged low-traffic periods, Carrier Shutdown is used to preserve essential coverage while deactivating capacity layers, leading to significant power savings of approximately 3% to 7%.

Through these initiatives, Globe saved around 637 MWh by the end of 2023, equating to a reduction of 464 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in its carbon footprint.

“The effective implementation of these advanced BTS power-saving techniques underscores our commitment to sustainability and innovation,” stated Joel Agustin, Globe’s SVP Head of Network Planning and Engineering. “We persistently incorporate sustainability initiatives into our network plans to decrease our equipment’s energy consumption. By utilizing the latest technology, we are not only improving our operational efficiency but also steering the industry towards a more sustainable future.”

Globe’s strategy includes a comprehensive approach to energy conservation and performance optimization without compromising the user experience. In addition to using BTS technology’s power-saving features, Globe is integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for improved efficiency, adopting energy-efficient solutions, decommissioning outdated equipment, and utilizing data analytics and crowdsourcing to minimize reliance on physical drive tests.

The company’s energy-saving efforts are part of its broader commitment to environmental stewardship, with the goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. As Globe continues to invest in and explore new technologies, it reaffirms its commitment to making a positive impact on society and the environment.
