Mobile Data Usage Skyrockets in Q1 as Connectivity Demand Rises

#Globe has witnessed a consistent increase in mobile data demand, recording 1,610 petabytes of mobile data traffic in Q1 2024, marking a 19% rise from the same period in the previous year, which was at 1,352.

The average mobile data usage per user has also experienced a significant surge, increasing by 24% to an average of 15.6 GB per month. This surge reflects the escalating engagement and dependence on mobile data among consumers, as the consumption of digital content and online activities persistently grow.

This trend has fueled the growth of Globe’s mobile data revenues by 10% in the first quarter of the year, reaching Php 23.8 billion, a rise from Php 21.7 billion in the same period last year.

This substantial growth is primarily driven by the broad adoption of smartphones and the growing popularity of data-intensive applications, according to Globe.

Darius Delgado, Head of Globe Consumer Mobile Business, stated, “Our dedication to enhancing our network capabilities and broadening our services to cater to our customers’ evolving needs is reflected in these results. As mobile data becomes a more dominant part of our revenue stream, we are more committed than ever to invest in cutting-edge technology and infrastructure to offer our customers an unmatched digital experience.”

As digital platforms become more integrated into consumers’ daily lives, mobile data usage has seen exponential growth. Mobile data now constitutes 82% of Globe’s total mobile revenues, up from 80% last year.

In contrast, traditional mobile services such as voice and SMS have experienced slight declines of 2% and 3% year-on-year, respectively, with revenues falling to Php 3.4 billion and Php 1.9 billion. This shift highlights a broader trend in consumer preference towards data-driven communication over traditional voice calls and text messaging.

On a sequential basis, mobile data revenues remained stable against Q4 2023, which is typically a strong period for data consumption due to the holiday season, indicating the robust, sustained demand for mobile internet services among Filipinos.

Globe continues to serve the digital lifestyle of Filipinos, who are progressively opting for mobile solutions for their communication, entertainment, and shopping needs. The company remains committed to strengthening its mobile data services and maintaining its leadership in a highly competitive market.
