Xiaomi 17T Series Global Launch: Leica 5x Telephoto & Live Moment Specs

The rapid development of mobile photography over the past two decades has made it easier and more accessible than ever for anyone to become a master behind the lens. While text and voice were once the primary ways we communicated with each other, today photos and videos have become integral to how we connect and share. But as mobile photography has become woven into the fabric of everyday life, people also expect more from their cameras—for them to go beyond simply capturing a moment and instead become a tool for expression, storytelling, and creativity.

This shift is also reshaping the mobile industry, with collaborations between smartphone brands and traditional camera makers playing a growing role in how photography is experienced. One such partnership is the collaboration between Xiaomi and Leica—a partnership that is redefining mobile photography by bringing together over a century of photographic heritage with the latest smartphone technology.

As the partnership enters its fifth year, the upcoming Xiaomi 17T Series, with its Leica 5x telephoto camera across the lineup and Leica Live Moment, signals the next step in this collaboration, pointing toward new possibilities in how stories are told through mobile phones.

From a Shared Idea to the Ultimate Photography Experience

In 2022, Xiaomi and Leica entered a strategic partnership built on a shared vision for mobile photography that would seek to explore the limits of optimal performance and mobile photography experiences.

One of the first results of the partnership was the implementation of the iconic Leica look on Xiaomi phones. Two distinct photographic styles were created: the "Leica Authentic Look", which replicated the natural style instantly recognizable as Leica, and the "Leica Vibrant Look", which preserved Leica's core identity while adapting the style for a mobile- and social-first look. Alongside these two major styles, other features like Leica watermarks and classic shutter sounds brought even more of the authentic Leica experience to Xiaomi smartphones.

Behind these evolving mobile imaging experiences, Leica's cutting-edge optics have continued to push the boundaries in terms of both image quality and style. The collaboration has progressed between different generations of lenses, evolving from iconic Summicron to premium Summilux optics, with the larger apertures of the latter helping to deliver clear, high-quality images.

In the scope of this collaboration, Xiaomi's technical innovations have been amplifying the Leica effect, leveraging enhanced sensors and wider apertures across key focal lengths to create a more premium camera experience. By combining the best of each other's strengths and technologies, the first stage of this partnership has continued to redefine mobile imaging, bringing the distinct experience of one of the world's most lauded camera makers to millions of smartphone users in the process.

From Co-engineering to Strategic Co-creation

Building upon the initial success of the partnership, Xiaomi and Leica upgraded their collaboration to a new model based on strategic co-creation in 2025. The first product to emerge from this was the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which set a new standard for mobile optical performance with the world's first Leica APO lens on a smartphone.

More importantly, this new phase of strategic co-creation extends beyond pure technological breakthroughs to a broader, more holistic expression of Leica's legacy. To mark Leica's 100-year anniversary, the two worked together to translate Leica's iconic heritage and design into the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi.

Drawing inspiration from iconic Leica cameras, this smartphone brings classic Leica design elements like the prestigious Red Dot badge and the Leica Camera Ring in the form of a physical dial on the camera deco, replicating the feel of a full-size camera in an ultra-slim modern smartphone. More than just a cosmetic homage, the phone also introduced Leica Essential mode, recreating the image quality and photographic style of iconic Leica cameras, including the Leica M9 and Leica M3 (with MONOPAN 50 film).

This end-to-end co-development places Leica's classic approach to capturing images at the very heart of the product, combining a century of photographic expertise with modern smartphone technology. As a result, the partnership has moved well beyond simply making photos look like they were taken with a high-end camera. Instead, it's a real step toward achieving true camera-like functionality and a more authentic photographic experience on a smartphone.

From Moments to Stories on Xiaomi 17T Series

As Xiaomi and Leica continue to push mobile imaging forward and narrow the gap between smartphones and traditional cameras, the focus is no longer on how close mobile photography can get to traditional cameras, but on how it can move beyond them.

Part of the motivation for this evolution is the shift in the way people themselves are using their phones to capture their most important moments. A single photo freezes time. A video records everything. But most real-life moments exist somewhere in between: a fleeting glance, a subtle shift in expression, the split second before or after something meaningful happens. This is where a new kind of storytelling begins.

The idea of bringing motion to photos is not new. Apple introduced Live Photo more than a decade ago, leading to a debate that has divided opinion ever since. What some dismiss as little more than a few seconds of extra footage and a waste of storage, others see as an exciting new medium filled with potential. Xiaomi and Leica sit squarely in the latter camp, seeing these dynamic images as a way to preserve emotion and stories that reside in subtle movements and fleeting expressions hidden beyond a single frozen frame.

This thinking led to Leica Live Moment on the upcoming Xiaomi 17T Series. With this feature, you can capture not only what happened, but how it felt. By treating movement as part of the storytelling—not just an afterthought—Leica Live Moment adds continuity, emotion, and context to everyday images. At the foundation of this is also Leica's signature aesthetic, which is applied across the rear camera system on the Xiaomi 17T Series, ensuring a familiar, classic Leica look whichever perspective you're going for.

But humanistic photography is where the new technology really makes its mark. Offered in Portrait mode with Leica Live Portrait, this adds a natural bokeh effect to these dynamic moments, allowing expressions and subtle movements to shine through naturally. A glance, a smile, or a quiet pause gains depth when motion is preserved, giving portraits a sense of breath.

Supporting this human-centered approach to photography, the Xiaomi 17T Series brings the iconic and powerful Leica 5x telephoto across all models in the lineup for the very first time, ensuring that every Leica Live Moment fully captures the expressions, motion, and emotion with the right level of depth, clarity, and confidence needed to make them feel alive—whether up close or from a distance.

A Shared Belief, Carried Forward

Through Leica Live Moment on the Xiaomi 17T Series, Xiaomi and Leica present their answer to the next evolution of mobile imaging. By preserving natural movement and emotion within the frame through authentic Leica photographic styles, images are no longer restricted to the moment the shutter is pressed, but instead capture life in the instant leading up to it.

Users can experience Leica Live Moment on the upcoming Xiaomi 17T Series alongside a full suite of flagship upgrades. These include a newly enhanced eye-care display, which supports longer viewing sessions with greater visual comfort, and a larger battery capacity across the entire lineup for longer, more dependable use throughout the day and beyond across a wide range of everyday scenarios.

The upcoming Xiaomi 17T Series is packed with flagship upgrades. Join Xiaomi at the Xiaomi 17T Series global launch on May 28 to experience the Xiaomi 17T Series and see Leica Live Moment come to life.
