Assisted KYC registrations; financial literacy workshops for barangay volunteers bring digital finance to underserved Bangsamoro areas
Barangay volunteers in Lake Sebu’s far-flung communities are stepping into the digital economy. Through a new partnership between the Municipal Government of Lake Sebu and #GCash, local volunteers are receiving hands-on financial literacy training to prepare them for seamless, digital allowance disbursements.
Conducted by GCash during the latest barangay volunteer payout, the financial literacy session and Know Your Customer (KYC) registration introduced participants to essential financial concepts and responsible digital financial practices while preparing them to digitally receive future allowances. The program responds to a longstanding challenge faced by many barangay volunteers: according to Municipal Treasurer Henry Magbanua, some barangays are only accessible via motorcycle, requiring volunteers to spend as much as ₱1,500 on transportation just to collect a ₱2,000 allowance. As a result, many are left with only ₱500 after travel expenses.

Once fully implemented, the partnership will enable the municipality to distribute allowances through the GCash Fund Disbursement Service, allowing volunteers to receive funds directly in their GCash accounts. Through local GCash Pera Outlets, beneficiaries can conveniently cash out within their own communities, eliminating costly and time-consuming trips to the poblacion.
"Our goal is to make government disbursement more accessible to every barangay volunteer, especially those living in remote sitios. By embracing digital finance, we can help reduce unnecessary travel, improve convenience, and ensure that more of the assistance reaches the people it is intended for. Beyond preparing volunteers to use digital financial services, the financial literacy session also introduced practical ways to manage money, use digital payments safely, and maximize the benefits of cashless transactions.
