PBGen. Ronnie Francis Cariaga, the acting director of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), is urging both the government and private sectors to enhance cybercrime strategies, extending even to the smallest community sectors, including micro, small, and medium enterprises.
A pivotal meeting was held at the W Global Center in Taguig City, involving key officials from PNP-ACG and security leaders from GCash, a leading finance app. The meeting aimed to fortify PNP’s enduring partnership with GCash in the fight against fraud and cybercrimes.
PNP-ACG proposed policies and ordinances to bolster the security of digital financial transactions in local communities, including sari-sari stores. Cariaga stated, “Our collaboration with digital financial institutions like GCash has become essential now that nearly all transactions are conducted digitally. It’s our duty as a law enforcement agency, and of course the LGUs, to stay updated and prepared for any threats posed by cybercriminals.”
During the meeting, GCash’s Chief Information and Security Officer, Miguel Geronilla, highlighted the app’s cybersecurity best practices and trust technology as integral elements of its digital financial services. He said, “A significant part of our mission at GCash is not only to enhance security measures in the app but also to ensure cybercriminals are penalized while continually educating the public on how to protect their e-wallet accounts.”
As the country’s largest digital ecosystem, GCash complies with regulatory requirements by implementing top-tier security features to safeguard users from scams. GCash Chief Legal Officer Atty. Maricor Alvarez-Adriano stated, “We remain an active ally of the government in pursuing cybercriminals and scammers to guarantee Filipinos have easy access to safe, secure, and convenient digital financial products and services.”
The ongoing collaboration between GCash and the authorities has resulted in the successful deactivation of 5.6 million accounts linked to suspicious activities and the rejection of 2.2 million account takeover attempts. In partnership with others, it has also dismantled 1,900 phishing websites and removed 51,800 malicious social media posts.
With trust and security forming the backbone of its business, GCash, in conjunction with its government partners, continues to leverage innovations that are accessible, safe, and easy for the masses to understand, leading to significant changes for millions of Filipinos.
